Loss can leave a pain so deep that words cannot reach it. Losing a loved one, a friend, a husband, a parent, a grandparent, a child, a sibling, or even someone we are estranged from can leave an empty place in our lives.
Death eventually touches everyone’s world, and even Jesus wept when faced with the pain of loss.
But there is another kind of death that sometimes needs to happen.
There are dark places, painful memories, old mistakes, shame, bitterness, regret, and negative things from our past that need to be put to rest.
Some things do not need another conversation. They need a funeral.
Your past does not define you unless you choose to keep living there. When we sincerely ask God for forgiveness, He does not keep digging up what He has forgiven, and neither should we.
Bury it.
Stop visiting the grave of something God has already redeemed.
The only reason to dig into that past again should be to thank God for how far He has brought you or to tell someone else what His grace and mercy can do. Your testimony may require remembering where you were, but it does not require living there again.
Let what needs to die, die. Then walk forward in the new life God has given you.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for carrying me through every kind of loss and for understanding the pain that sometimes goes deeper than I can explain.
Help me also recognize the things within my past that need to be put to rest. Give me the strength to stop resurrecting what You have already forgiven, healed, delivered me from, or carried me through.
Let my past become a testimony instead of a residence.
May I remember it only with gratitude for Your grace and mercy and with the willingness to use my story to help someone else find their way to You. Help me bury what needs to stay buried and confidently walk forward in the new things You have for me.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
